With the growing popularity of Indian Premier Super League and the youth of India badly hooked to the English Premier League, there is no denying the might of this game, which is fast contending the popularity of Cricket.

Lawn Tennis

Tennis has become one of the most popular sports in India. Thanks to some iconic role models such as Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, who have reached the pinnacles of tennis and brought laurels to the country.
Some real benefits of Tennis based on research conducted by Dr Jack Groppel from various University sources in United States:

1. Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes.
2. Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain.
3. Tennis outperforms golf, inline skating and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics
4. Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating, or cycling, according to studies on caloric expenditures.

5. People who participate in tennis 3 hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause.

Martial Arts

Martial Arts

While there are many different styles of Martial Arts, some of the most common and widely practised forms around the world are:

  • Tae Kwon Do (Taekwondo): the Korean art of self-defense, one of the oldest forms of martial arts (reaching back over 2,000 years), and the most widely practised martial art in the world. Training involves learning a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes, as well as varying forms of take-downs, throws, and joint locks, all of which develop strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and stamina. Taekwondo is known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, as compared to other martial arts such as karate. In addition to self-defense training, students learn prearranged sequences of techniques known as forms or Poomsae (known in other martial arts as kata). Tae kwon do and judo is the only two martial arts included in the Olympic Games.
  • Karate: a martial art developed in Okinawa, Japan that stresses striking techniques, such as punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands (karate chop). In comparison to tae kwon do, karate tends to focus more on hand strikes, whereas tae kwon do emphasise kicking techniques. The major traditional styles of karate are Shotokan, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Wado Ryu.

Skating is picking up rapidly as a popular sport due to limited infrastructure required and the great pleasure that kids derive out of the sport.

Skating offers wholesome benefits such as :
  • aerobic (cardio): skating provides aerobic benefits that compare to running and biking and delivers a better cardiovascular workout than stair-stepping equipment
  • unaerobic (muscle development): it provides a natural and smooth side-to-side movement that exercises adductor (inner thigh) and abductor (buttocks) muscles that may be ignored by other activities
  • joint friendly sport (low impact on knees and back): It also has low impact advantages and generates up to half the impact shock to joints, ligaments and tendons that running creates or some of the popular racquet sports such as tennis, squash, badminton creates.
  • improved mental clarity and focus: Improve your mental clarity and focus and reduce stress and depression

‘Aerobic’ exercise refers to exercise that requires the consumption of substantially more oxygen than at rest. It is of a light to moderate intensity, and can be undertaken for a prolonged duration (many minutes to several hours) without excessive fatigue. Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, jogging, swimming or cycling at a steady pace. Another example would be dancing or ‘aerobics’ classes.

The benefits of aerobic exercise can be broadly categorised as either ‘fitness’ (physical capacity) or ‘health’.

  • Fitness — including increased cardiorespiratory fitness and endurance (stamina)
  • Reduced risk of certain health problems
  • Weight Control
